Delabole

Deep in earth, invading, grating,
Hacking through the brittle vein
Heaving out, hauling, sorting,
Greenscape's wound and crofters' gain.

Squared and dressed, placed in sequence,
Holding back Atlantic rain
Cornish slate in all abundance
Denuded land, ne'ermore the same

High above, the rolling white blades
Cut through air, spin through the day
Drawing heat to warm the cottage
Capped with rows of dappled grey
